Frank Kermode
Sir Frank Kermode has died at the age of 90. He was a wonderfully gifted and hugely distinguished literary critic. As it happens I was recommending to someone just yesterday his Romantic Image (1957), over fifty years later still the best and most lucid study of the intellectual currents flowing around and through Yeats between late Romanticism and Modernism.
The announcement in the London Review of Books lists an astonishing number of publications there: he had been an eminence grise behind the magazine since its foundation, suggested by him in an Observer article, in 1979.
The Times now being shamefully hidden behind its money firewall, here is the obituary in The Guardian. His grace and erudition will be painfully missed.
